Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory disease that is considered to be a classic autoimmune disease. Periodontitis is chronic infection of periodontal tissue that can lead to systemic and local inflammatory responses and destroy periodontal support tissue through an immune response. The clinicopathology of both involves the destruction of connective tissue, and the pathogenesis also involves the abnormal expression and function of T and B cells as well as the expression disorder of cytokines. This article reviews the relationship between periodontitis and systemic lupus erythematosus from the aspects of epidemiology, immunity, genetic and familial factors, bacterial infection and cytokines.
