Abstract: Objective To investigate the relationship between the expression of Axl gene and oncogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods The immunohistochemical expressions of Axl genes in tumor tissues from 42 patients with OSCC (OSCC group) and in correspondingly adjacent tissues (adjacent group) were examined. In vitro, expression of mRNA and protein of Axl in normal human oral epithelium cell (HOEC), immortalized normal oral keratinocyte cell (NOK), tongue squamous cell carcinoma cell lines UM1 and UM2 were detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blot (WB), respectively. Results There was significant difference between OSCC group and adjacent group (61.9% vs. 26.2%, P<0.05) in immunohistochemical expression of Axl. Expression of mRNA and proteins of Axl in UM2 and UM1 were significantly higher than those in HOEC and NOK in vitro. Conclusions Strongly expressed in OSCC tissue and cell lineages compared with their normal counterparts, Axl gene may play a role in OSCC oncogenesis.
