Abstract: The development of salivaomics techniques provide a robust platform for exploring biomarkers in saliva. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues initiated by the imbalance of periodontal pathogens and host inflammatory and immune response, which results in progressive destruction of the periodontal soft and hard tissues. Salivary microorganisms, biomarkers of periodontal inflammation, soft tissue and bone destruction can reflect the occurrence and development of periodontitis. Here, we review the current status of saliva biomarkers for periodontitis and their potential applications.
