Abstract: Bone defect caused by trauma, post-surgery tumor or septic necrosis usually cannot or cannot be completely restored by itself, and needs suitable substitute bones to help repair the defect. Thus scientists have been making efforts in developing and optimizing all sorts of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Chitosan has been served as one of the excellent raw materials of scaffolds for its outstanding biodegradability and biocompatibility. This paper focuses on reviewing recent studies on design and modification of chitosan scaffolds in restoration of bone defect and regeneration.
