Abstract: Metformin is a biguanide hypoglycemic drug mainly used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome. However, the potential use of metformin goes far beyond its intended use. In addition to the role of lowering blood sugar, metformin has the effects of anti-tumor, anti-aging, anti-inflammation, modulation of gut microbiota and potential osteogenesis. This article reviews the role of metformin in various fields and provides a reference for clinicians and researchers.
