Abstract: So far the reconstruction of bone defect caused by a variety of inflammation and trauma remains a major challenge. Traditional therapies rely mainly on autologous or allograft transplants combined with physiotherapy and gene therapy to accelerate bone healing. In bone immunology, macrophages are important participants in bone repair and play an important role in the early stage of bone injury and in advanced bone remodeling. This review summarizes the effects of macrophages on the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and the underneath mechanisms.
