Abstract: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is one of the major risk factors of chronic periodontitis, while chronic periodontitis increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic periodontitis has not been clarified so far. Non-surgical periodontal treatment can not only improve the condition of the periodontal tissues, but also ameliorate the blood glucose status of patients in some degree. With the development of molecular biology technology, studies on type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic periodontitis from the perspectives of microorganisms, immunity, and inflammatory factors have been constantly deepened. In this paper, a review about the microbial indicators, immunity, inflammation indicators, clinical indicators of type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic periodontitis was made. The effect of non-surgical periodontal treatment on illness was also reviewed carefully.
