Abstract: Abstract: Objective To observe the expression of S100 Calcium Binding Protein A8 (S100A8) on macrophages (m?) in gingival tissue with chronic periodontitis, to analyze the role of CD68-S100A8 double positive m? in the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis. Methods The gingival tissue specimens of 60 subjects were divided into three groups according to the degree of periodontitis lesions: normal control group (20 cases), mild periodontitis group (20 cases) and severe periodontitis group (20 cases). Tissue specimens were fixed by 4% paraformaldehyde solution, stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathology, stained with double-immunofluorescence for identification of CD68-S100A8 double-positive m? in gingival tissues. Results Compared with the normal control group, the expression of CD68-S100A8 double positive m? in gingival tissues with human chronic periodontitis was significantly increased (P<0.05); the number of CD68-S100A8 double positive m? in severe periodontitis group was significantly higher than that in the slight periodontitis group (P < 0.05). Conclusion The results suggest that the CD68-S100A8 double positive m? may play important roles in the initiation, development and pathogenesis of the human chronic periodontitis.
