Abstract: Objective To evaluate the success rate and potential prognostic factors of apical microsurgery and provide references for treating complex periapical diseases which cannot be cured through root canal therapy. Method 144 patients who received apical microsurgery from 2012 to 2014 in our hospital were followed up for one year, 190 teeth in total. Therapeutic effect of apical microsurgery was evaluated by improvement in symptoms, clinical examination and radiographical examination. Statistical analysis was used to analyze the prognostic factors of gender, age, and tooth position. Results The one year success rate was 92.63% (176 teeth) and the failure rate is 7.37% (14 teeth). Gender, age and tooth location had no significant influences on the outcome of apical microsurgery. Conclusion Apical microsurgery provides an effective method for treating complex periapical diseases, and is worthy of being applied in clinic.
