Abstract: In the orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to identify treatment plans by a correct diagnosis. And it is the accurate image data that are essential in the diagnosis process. Meanwhile, it also needs to use accurate image to assist monitoring treatment to improve the effects when necessary. Xray cephalometrical films were invented by Broadbent in 1931, it has become a common tool of orthodontists’ clinical work since then. But it is only a 2D shadow of 3D structure, which has certain limitations. In the late 1990s, with the appearance of CBCT, it made orthodontists change their eras, turning 2D into 3D. Recently, the system of CBCT 3D cephalometrics has not been unified, it still has a long way to go. This paper will aim at reviewing the application and development of CBCT in the orthodontics cephalometrics.
