Abstract: Objective To evaluate the clinical effects of parotid masseter fascia flap, sternocleidomastoid flap and heterogeneous acellular dermal matrix on preventing the incidence of Frey′s syndrome after parotidectomy. Methods Having suffering from benign tumors in the parotid gland,153 patients who underwent partial parotidectomy in our hospital from 2005 to 2010 were included in this study.51 patients (control group) were treated with partial parotidectomy without parotid masseter fascia reserved.18 patients (parotid masseter fascia group) had parotid masseter fascia reserved in the partial parotidectomy.23 patients (sternocleidomastoid flap group) were treated with sternocleidomastoid flap in the partial parotidectomy.61 patients (ADM group) underwent insertion of H-ADM after parotidectomy. All the patients were inquired by questionnaire for subjective symptoms of Frey′s syndrome and objectively evaluated by Minor′s starch-iodine test.SPSS 17.0 software package was used for Chi-square test. Results The incidences of subjective symptoms of Frey′s syndrome in four groups were respectively 39.22%(20/51)、5.56%(1/18)、13.04%(3/23)、4.92%(3/61)and the incidences of objective ones by starch-iodine testing were 72.55%(37/51)、16.67%(3/18)、17.39%(4/23)、8.20%(5/61)respectively.The difference between the four groups was statistically significant (P<0.05) while there was no statistically significant difference among B,C,D groups. Conclusions Implanting ADM is an easy and effective way to prevent the incidence of Frey′s syndrome in the patients after partial parotidectomy, which is worth widespread use.
