Abstract: Patients with severe periodontitis usually need non-surgical periodontal therapy, periodontal surgery and multidisciplinary therapy, due to severe alveolar bone destruction and attachment loss together with several concomitant lesions. However, non-surgical therapy is still the most fundamental, effective and important part. Although traditional mechanical treatment presents certain limitations, additional means with some unique advantages have been increasingly applied to the clinical manipulation, such as periodontal endoscope, medication and laser, etc. Research progress on non-surgical therapy for severe periodontitis will be reviewed in the article.
