Abstract: Idiopathic condylar resorption (ICR) is a progressive bone resorption disease that affects the mandibular condyle. It has been attracting widespread attention for its unknown etiology and pathology as well as aggressive progression. The main clinical manifestations include mandibular retraction, decreased ramus height, anterior open bite, premature contacts on posterior teeth and skeletal class II malocclusion. This article reviews the progress on etiology and pathology, clinical manifestations, treatment strategy and methods of ICR as well as secondary maxillofacial abnormalities in recent years.
