Abstract: Abstract: Objective: To determine the effects of Rheum officinale in combination with Scutellaria baicalensis extracts on the inhibition of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), C-reactive protein (CRP) and the promotion of bone tissue regeneration in SD rats with periodontitis. Methods: Periodontitis models in SD rats were prepared by using wire ligatures and P.g W83 bacterial. 100 rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: sham-operation group (Sham), periodontitis (P), Rheum officinale extracts (DH), Scutellaria baicalensis extracts (HQ), Rheum officinale in combination with Scutellaria baicalensis extracts (DH+HQ). The images of immunopathology, the contents of PGE2 and CRP and the regeneration of alveolar bone were measured after 4 weeks using different drugs. Results: After building periodontitis models in SD rats, the inflammation symptoms and bone resorption of periodontium were obvious, and the contents of PGE2 and CRP were also higher than Sham group (P < 0.05). The osteoblast formation was increased, the levels of PGE2 and CRP were significantly reduced, increased the bone morphometry parameters and local alveolar bone regeneration also increased in in DH+HQ combination group than other groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Combined application of Rheum officinale and Scutellaria baicalensis extracts can remarkably reduce the contents of PGE2 and CRP, improve the parameters of bone histomorphometry and increase bone regeration, which is better than single application of Rheum officinale or Scutellaria baicalensis extracts.
