Comparative study on effect of fixed appliances and removable aligners on periodontal health

Abstract: Objective To observe the changes of the periodontal indexand to compare the periodontal status of adults treated with fixed orthodontic appliances and removable aligners.Methods Eighty 18~32 year-old patients were selected and divided into 2 groups: group A and group B.40 patients in group A wore removable aligners while 40 others in group B wore fixed orthodontic appliances.Periodontal indices(GI,PLI,PD) were examined in both groups before treatment,6 weeks and 6 months after treatment.Results These periodontal indices of fixed orthodontic appliances were significantly greater than those of removable aligners and there was significant difference.Conclusions Compared with fixed orthodontic appliances,removable aligners are more propitious to periodontal health.
