Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of distalization of the lower dentition using the microimplant on the upper airway dimensions in patients with class Ⅲ malocclusion. Methods 12 patients were selected to distalize the lower dentition with the microimplant. The cephalometric radiographs of the pre and posttreatment upper airway and dental changes were measured and statistically analyzed. Results There were statistically significant reductions in LPW,UPW and especially PAS. Meanwhile, obvious decreasing of L1-MP and slightly increasing of SNA were found. Other changes had no statistically significant differences. Conclusion The treatment of distalizing the lower dentition by using microimplant leads to the narrowness of upper airway, mainly in PAS area.
Key words: microimplant, upper airway, cephalometry, class Ⅲ malocclusion
