Abstract: Occlusal discomfort syndrome(ODS)refers to a syndrome characterized with discomfort of masticatory muscles and nerves related to mandibular movement. Patients with persistent discomfort may have no visible premature occlusion contact. ODS patients frequently suffer from anxiety and depression. ODS occurs usually secondary to prosthodontic or orthodontic treatment and its pathogenesis is unknown. The passive self-adaptation of stomatognathic system to slightly inharmonious occlusion might lead to ODS. There is no consensus on Methods for ODS treatment. For ODS patients with invisible occlusion interference, incorrect occlusion adjustment might exacerbate patients' symptoms. Psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy seem to be effective in ODS treatment. This review aims to describe the epidemiological characteristics, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of ODS.
